About Us

South Bay Community Services is a community-based, behavioral health care organization offering a continuum of services including adult behavioral health, substance abuse counseling, children’s behavioral health, day services, autism services and early childhood services.

We believe that every member of the community is worth fighting for – and believing in. With more than 30 years of experience, South Bay continues to build upon our reputation as a leader and innovator in behavioral health care by constantly evolving our programs to meet the changing needs of local and state agencies, schools, hospitals, underserved families, children and at-risk adults.

Our outreach program is unparalleled to any other behavioral health services in the New England area, giving us the opportunity to physically reach those who need it most no matter where they are or their circumstances – including homes, schools, child care centers, hospitals, group homes and our own South Bay offices. We’ve proven that behavioral health care works best when it is delivered in familiar surroundings. By embedding ourselves in the community, we build the strong connections and personal relationships that are key to creating positive change in a person’s life.

Working collaboratively, we help individuals and families become more self-sufficient and lead fulfilling, productive lives by:

  • Delivering a full range of resources, staff and programs
  • Helping people build meaningful relationships in the community
  • Responding quickly to the needs of individuals and families while working efficiently to create a plan of action
  • Focusing on achieving the best possible results in all aspects of behavioral healthcare, from quality of care to operations and third-party reimbursement
  • Ensuring the growth, stability and well-being of children and families during the early years of development

When others give up hope, we’re just getting started.

History and Milestones
The beginning
The company was founded in 1986 in Brockton, Massachusetts, as South Bay Mental Health with an inaugural staff of 12 clinicians. Located approximately 25 miles south of Boston, South Bay met a need in the area by delivering outpatient behavioral health services to children and families. By taking an innovative, community-based approach to services, South Bay helped eliminate many barriers that previously prevented and disrupted families from receiving treatment. This approach was immediately successful and sought after by referral agencies.

New facilities stemmed from early success
The accomplishments of South Bay’s clinical programs offered in the Brockton area led to requests for services from surrounding communities in the state. In 1990, South Bay opened an outpatient clinic in Plymouth. The Plymouth site quickly grew and led to the opening of a site in Weymouth in 1991. In response to growing requests for services in new communities, South Bay opened clinics in Attleboro, Fall River, South Yarmouth and Lowell throughout the early 1990s.

Growing our programs
In 1992, it became apparent to South Bay leadership that they could do more for the communities throughout Massachusetts, and began expanding the company’s breadth of services to complement the existing behavioral health services. The same year, South Bay began providing outpatient substance abuse counseling services. In 1993, the company continued to diversify its programs by expanding into adult day services, a day treatment program to care for adults who have been hospitalized, and early intervention services, a program to provide educational and developmental services for infants, toddlers and their families.

The road to South Bay Community Services
In 2012, South Bay was acquired by Community Intervention Services, a national provider of community-based behavioral health and substance abuse services owned by H.I.G. Capital. As a result, South Bay improved internal and external services with new technology, human capital, increased employee compensation and benefits, and infrastructure improvements. The resources available through the CIS investment allowed South Bay to expand its expertise in the industry and find innovative solutions to enhance the consumer experience, such as electronic health records, facility renovations and continual professional development opportunities for staff.

In 2016, the company chose to rebrand to South Bay Community Services in order to best exemplify our range of behavioral health care and family services, as well as to accentuate our commitment to the people we serve. At this point, South Bay had grown to provide more services than described by the name “mental health,” a term that was appropriate at our company’s 1986 inception. The new identity marks our company’s evolution and parallels these enhancements both to quality of clinical services provided and overall employment experience now offered at the new South Bay.

The “new” South Bay
Now, South Bay is one of the largest and most proficient behavioral health providers serving more than 35,000 individuals and families annually and offering 47 programs in 23 locations across Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
